How Will Extra Credit Affect My Grade?
Extra credit increases your grade based on the bonus amount, total possible points, and your course grading method.

How to Calculate Extra Credit into Grade
Extra credit can increase your grade in different ways. Choose the calculation method that matches your teacher’s or professor’s grading policy.
Points-Based Extra Credit
Use this mode when bonus points are added to your earned score without increasing the total possible points.
Formula: (Earned Points + Extra Credit Points) ÷ Total Possible Points × 100
For example, you earned 195 out of 250 points and received 5 extra credit points.
- Before extra credit: 195 ÷ 250 = 78% (C)
- After extra credit: 200 ÷ 250 = 80% (B)
- Improvement: +2 percentage points
Percentage-Based Extra Credit
Use this mode when your instructor adds a fixed number of percentage points to your current grade.
For example, an 85% grade with a 3-percentage-point bonus becomes 88% (B).
Weighted Category Extra Credit
Use this mode when bonus points are awarded within a weighted category, such as homework, quizzes, or exams.
For example, if homework counts for 30% of your course grade, earning 10 bonus points out of 100 possible homework points adds 3 percentage points to your overall grade. An 88% overall grade would become 91% (A).
How the Target Grade Calculation Works?
The calculator uses the grading method selected by your teacher.
1. Extra Points Needed:(Target Grade % - Current Grade %) × Remaining Points Possible
2. Extra Credit Calculation:Extra Credit Points ÷ Total Course Points × 100 = Grade Boost
When Does Bonus Points Have the Biggest Impact?
Extra credit usually makes the greatest difference when:
- the course uses a points-based grading system,
- the total course points are relatively low,
- you’re close to the next letter grade,
- bonus points are added directly to your earned score.
Extra credit generally has less impact when:
- the course contains hundreds of total points,
- only a few bonus points are available,
- grades are capped at 100%,
- most of the course has already been completed.
Estimating the impact before completing optional work helps you decide whether the extra effort is likely to improve your final grade.
Common Teacher Extra Credit Policies
Teachers and professors may apply extra credit differently:
- Bonus points: Added to earned points without increasing total possible points.
- Percentage-point boosts: Added directly to a percentage grade.
- Weighted category bonuses: Applied within a specific grading category.
- Grade caps: Some courses limit final grades or category scores to 100%.
Check your syllabus or ask your instructor how extra credit is applied. Your official grade may differ from the calculator’s estimate.

How do I calculate my grade with extra credit?
Add your extra credit points to your earned points, divide by the total possible points, and multiply by 100.
Formula: (Earned Points + Extra Credit Points) ÷ Total Possible Points × 100
For example, 195 out of 250 points plus 5 bonus points becomes 200 ÷ 250 × 100 = 80% (B), up from 78% (C).
This assumes the bonus does not increase the total possible points.
How much will 5 extra credit points raise my grade?
It depends on your total possible points. Five bonus points increase your grade by:
5 percentage points out of 100 total points.
2 percentage points out of 250 total points.
1 percentage point out of 500 total points.
The fewer total points available, the greater the impact of the same bonus.
How much is 3% extra credit?
If your instructor awards 3 percentage points of extra credit, an 85% grade becomes 88%.
However, a 3% relative increase is different: 85% × 1.03 = 87.55%. Check whether your instructor means percentage points or a relative percentage increase. The calculator’s Percentage-Based mode uses percentage-point bonuses.
How do you calculate extra credit percentage?
For points-based extra credit, divide the bonus points by the total possible points and multiply by 100.
Formula: Extra Credit Points ÷ Total Possible Points × 100
For example, 10 bonus points in a 500-point course produce a 2-percentage-point increase, assuming the total possible points remain unchanged.
For weighted categories, the impact also depends on the category’s percentage weight.
How many extra credit points do I need to get an A?
On this calculator’s simplified grading scale, an A starts at 90%.
For a points-based course, multiply the total possible points by 0.90 and subtract your earned points.
For example, if you have 420 out of 500 points:
450 − 420 = 30 additional bonus points needed.
You can also enter a target grade in the calculator. In weighted mode, it estimates the additional bonus points needed within your selected category. Whether that target is achievable depends on your instructor’s rules.
Can extra credit change my letter grade?
Yes. Extra credit can move your score into a higher letter-grade range.
For example, increasing an 89% grade to 90% changes a B to an A on this calculator’s simplified A–F scale. Smaller increases may improve your percentage without changing your letter grade.
Can extra credit raise my grade above 100%?
Yes, if your instructor allows uncapped extra credit. For example, 98 out of 100 points plus 5 bonus points equals 103%.
Some instructors cap assignment, category, or final grades at 100%. Check your syllabus because the official grade may differ from the calculator’s estimate.
