How to Calculate a Percentage Grade

To find a percentage grade, divide the score earned by the total possible score, then multiply by 100:

Percentage Grade = (Score Earned ÷ Total Possible Score) × 100

Examples:

  • 7 out of 10 = 70%
  • 15 out of 20 = 75%
  • 18 out of 20 = 90%
  • 13 out of 15 = 86.7%

This same formula applies whether you're scoring a quiz by correct answers, a project by points, or an exam by marks. For courses where different assignments carry different weights (tests worth more than homework, for example), the math works differently, see how weighted grading works on a syllabus or use the Syllabus Grade Calculator for that calculation.

Why Two Students Can Get the Same Letter Grade With Different Percentages?

A letter grade is a range, not a single number. A student who scores 81% and a student who scores 89% both earn a B on the standard scale, even though their raw performance differs by 8 points. This is intentional — letter grades exist to make academic performance easy to compare across different tests, classes, and schools, without requiring everyone to track exact percentages.

A 90% on a 10-question quiz and a 90% on a 50-question final both convert to an A, even though one test had five times more material. The letter grade normalizes for test length, which raw percentage alone doesn't do.

Quick Score Lookup by Test Size

Find your test size, then locate your score in the table below. Each table covers the full realistic scoring range for that test size. Scores below roughly 45% are rare lookups in practice. If yours falls outside these tables, the above tool gives an instant answer for any score.

How Many Questions Can You Miss and Still Get an A?

One of the most common grading questions is how many mistakes you can make while still earning an A.

20-Question Test

  • Miss 0–2 questions = A
  • Miss 3 questions = B

30-Question Test

  • Miss 0–3 questions = A
  • Miss 4 questions = B

50-Question Test

  • Miss 0–5 questions = A
  • Miss 6 questions = B

Because percentages determine letter grades, the number of questions you can miss depends on the total number of questions on the test.

Understanding GPA Equivalents

This page displays GPA values using the standard unweighted 4.0 grading scale:

  • A = 4.0
  • B = 3.0
  • C = 2.0
  • D = 1.0
  • F = 0.0

Important: Schools may use weighted GPA systems, 4.3 scales, 5.0 scales, honors weighting, AP weighting, or custom grading policies. Always verify GPA calculations with your school or course syllabus.

Why Students Use Score Lookup Charts

Score lookup charts help students quickly understand academic performance without doing manual calculations.

They are commonly used for:

  • Quiz scores
  • Test scores
  • Exam scores
  • Classroom assessments
  • Grading rubrics
  • Course grades
  • Report cards
  • Gradebook reviews
  • Homework scores
  • Academic progress tracking

Because every percentage is already calculated, score lookup charts provide a fast way to check results immediately after receiving a test or assignment.

FAQs:

What is a percentage scale?

A percentage scale is the full 0–100% range used to express how much of a possible score was earned before it's converted into a letter grade.

Is 65 percent a passing grade?
